The ExplorationWorks scholarship fund ensures that all families have the chance to experience ExplorationWorks’ interactive and fun-filled science education programming. Practical Potions

Can you beat the summer heat using household ingredients? Have you ever wanted to make your own cleaning supplies and soap? Answer these questions and impress your family and friends with your homemade creations such as toothpaste, insect repellent, soap, laundry detergent,  bubble solution and ice cream. It’s all about science and fun when it comes to making practical potions!

One of our most popular camps! Become an amateur chemist and experiment with a wide variety of chemical creations. Play with surprising science as we make ooey-gooey polymers, colorful colloids and exciting chemical reactions.

Take fort-building to the next level! Train your brain to build with engineering challenges and learn the basics of architectural design. Collaborate with local engineers and architects to experience what it takes to build astounding structures.  The final day brings it all together as we construct our own amazing forts!

SciGirls

Inspired by the nationwide TV program, SciGirls, this camp lets girls work together to design inventions in fun and fabulous challenges. These hands-on, minds-on activities will stretch your creativity and problem-solving skills. As SciGirls, we’ll meet female engineers, experts, and researchers who help us take our experiments to the next level.

Are you curious about robotics and want to try something new and exciting? Why not try EV3, Lego’s most advanced robotics platform? EV3 is more powerful and complex than NXT, allowing for advanced builds and sensors.  EV3 has interactive servo motors with built-in rotation sensors along with color sensor, gyro sensor, ultrasonic sensor, and touch sensors.

Lights, camera, animate! Have you ever wondered how animation goes from pencil to TV screen? We start with the basics of hand-drawn animation and work toward stop motion, then use technology to create our own short films.

Experiment Extravaganza

Are you always curious? Do you wonder, “what would happen if…”? Have you ever tried to turn your kitchen into a laboratory, or design your own experiments? For kids who never stop investigating, this camp is the scientific method at its best!

This preschool camp helps little scientists explore the power of curiosity as we use our senses to  observe and ask questions. Every experiment starts with wondering, “what would happen if…?”

Do you find yourself fiddling with circuits or playing with programming? This camp is for the tech master interested in Raspberry Pi microcomputers, coding with Scratch, Sphero robotics, and learning the basics of programming through computer-aided design (CAD).

Ingenious Inventions

In this camp, creativity is the mother of all invention! Young problem-solvers are challenged to design incredible contraptions, then take their ideas from imagination to action. If you can dream it, you can invent it!

From Earth to the Stars… and Back!

Come explore the final frontier known as space. Explore the enormity of the universe, create your own planet, play with toys, make space suits and even eat some space food. To infinity and beyond is merely the beginning for this class!

July 10-13

On the Rocks (CAMP FULL – Call to get on waiting list)
Dates: July 10 – 13
Time: Mon & Weds 9:00am – noon  /  Tues & Thurs 8:00am – 4:30pm
Ages: 9 – 12
Cost:  $225 Members / $250 Non-Members

Get a grip on climbing skills while exploring local ecology, geology and history. Monday (9am – noon) is spent at ExplorationWorks, learning the basics of rock climbing, including gear orientation, knot tying, and movement techniques. Tuesday (8am – 4:30pm) we travel to a climbing site to practice safe outdoor climbing with minimal environmental impact. Wednesday (9am – noon) we return to ExplorationWorks to learn Leave No Trace outdoor skills. Thursday, it’s back to the rocks with another climbing expedition. Safety is paramount, and all participants will wear a helmet and harness. Students will need a sack lunch, sunscreen, snacks and comfortable clothing for unpredictable Montana weather. Tuesday and Thursday transportation provided by ExplorationWorks.

NOTE: Pick-up and drop-off is at ExplorationWorks each day.

Budding Biologists
Dates: July 10 – 13

Budding Biologists Mini

Water Wonders

You’re sure to get your feet wet as we explore different streams and ponds on an aquatic expedition around Helena! Capture and identify the elusive creatures that live under and near the water, and learn what makes water healthy.  We’ll bring a few of our macroinvertebrates back to ExplorationWorks and magnify them on the big screen – you’ll be amazed!

NOTE: Pick-up and drop-off at ExplorationWorks each day. Transportation to local water habitats will be provided by ExplorationWorks.

Museum Mystery

A “crime” has been committed at ExplorationWorks and we’re looking for the next generation of forensic scientists to help us solve the mystery. Take DNA samples, fingerprints, and study crime scene evidence to solve the crime and locate the criminal!

3D Printing (CAMP FULL – Call to get on waiting list)

Ever wondered how a 3D printer works? What about designing your very own creation to be printed on a 3D printer? Learn computer-aided design (CAD) programming, experiment with different materials, and complete a different challenge every day!

Pirate Camp
Dates: July 17 – 20

Ahoy! We’re looking for swashbuckling girls and boys who are eager to earn their sea legs. When you join this crew, you’ll invent handy pirate tools, sail unsinkable ships, decipher treasure maps, and embark on treasure-hunting adventures. Be sure to bring your sunscreen, water bottle, and good walking shoes or you’ll be walking the plank!

July 24-27

Radical Rafting
Dates: July 24 – 27
Time: Mon & Weds 9:00 – noon  /  Tues & Thurs 8:00am – 4:30pm
Ages: 9 – 12

Experience the voyage! Monday (9:00 – noon) this camp meets at Spring Meadow Lake State Park, where kids learn basic water safety, equipment care and paddle strokes and commands. Tuesday (8am – 4:30pm) we take our rafts on the Missouri River and learn safe water navigation, paddle board and kayak skills, and river ecology. Wednesday (9am – noon) we return to ExplorationWorks to learn Leave No Trace outdoor skills. On Thursday (8:00am – 4:30pm) it’s back to the river as we gain more experience on the water, investigating native plants, geology, and wildlife along the way. Safety is paramount, and all participants will wear a helmet and life jacket. Students will need a sack lunch, sunscreen, snacks and layers of clothing for unpredictable Montana weather. Tuesday and Thursday transportation provided by ExplorationWorks.

NOTE: On Monday,  drop-off and pick-up is at Spring Meadow Lake State Park. All other days, campers will be dropped off and picked up at ExplorationWorks.

Outdoor Explorer (CAMP FULL – Call to get on waiting list)

Learn what it takes to stay alive and thrive outdoors, whether you’re a grizzly or a grade schooler! Learn about animal behavior and gain skills like compass orientation, shelter building and plant identification. We’ll explore the biology, geology, and ecology of Mount Helena. Each day, students will need water, good hiking shoes, sunscreen, snacks, and a comfortable pack to hold supplies on our outdoor adventures.

NOTE: This camp is not held at ExplorationWorks. Each day, students must be dropped off and picked up at the Mt. Helena trailhead parking lot, 2 miles from ExplorationWorks.

Outdoor Explorer Mini
Dates: July 24 – 26

Learn what it takes to bring science outdoors, a must for any active little scientist! Preschoolers in this camp will spend part of the time outside, playing animal games and learning plant identification, and learning to safely explore the living world.

If you’re fascinated by the insides of organisms, this is the camp for you! In this class we’ll practice comparative anatomy as we perform daily dissections on a wide variety of items. Specimens could include sheep eyes, owl pellets, mice, turtles, and squirmy invertebrates.

Kids Kicking Cancer Camp
Dates: Aug 14 – 17

The fourth annual KKCC will feature the “greatest hits” of our summer camp activities. Our goal is to give cancer patients and survivors a great opportunity to have adventures, do science, learn about themselves, and have fun. This camp is for kids who have beaten cancer or are currently in treatment, and their siblings. The camp will run 10:00am – 2:00pm Monday through Thursday, with lunch provided each day. Please consult your doctor to make sure attending this camp is a safe decision.
